Jess: Coastline Air, this is Jess, the team's AI receptionist. What's happening with your system?

Caller: Our ducted air has stopped completely and it's 38 degrees.

Jess: Is this an emergency, no heating or cooling at all right now?

Caller: Nothing at all. We've got a newborn at home.

Jess: Okay, I'm putting you straight through to a technician now. Stay on the line.

An AI receptionist is software that answers your business phone in a natural, synthetic voice, finds out what the caller needs, then books them in, puts them through to a person or takes a message. Alony is an Australian platform that lets a business build one in a guided wizard in a few minutes and give it an Australian local or mobile number.

What happens inside an AI receptionist call?

Most AI receptionists run a loop of three parts.

  • Speech recognition turns the caller's words into text.
  • A language model reads the text and your instructions (greeting, questions, files, transfer rules), then writes the reply or takes an action such as booking or transferring.
  • A synthetic voice reads the reply aloud. The loop repeats every turn.

How does a call with Alony work?

Every Alony agent follows a call flow: the paths a call can take, set by the business.

  1. Greets the callerThe greeting you wrote in the wizard.
  2. Is it an emergency? Is this an emergency, no heating or cooling at all right now?
    • Urgent
      1. Puts the call through to your transfer number, or takes an urgent message
    • Routine
      1. Takes the caller's details, then books, answers from your website or files, or takes a message
  3. After the call: recorded, transcribed and emailed to you as a summary

What an AI receptionist can't do

  • It can be wrong. It answers from your website and files. Test it with real caller questions and read the first week of summaries.
  • It stops at your plan's minutes. There is no overage charge. Pricing lists each allowance.
  • It books only where it is connected. Self-serve, Alony connects to Cal.com and GoHighLevel, and sets them up for you from an API key; on Enterprise, or as a custom build, it can connect to almost any system with an API (how). Starter can also send call data to a webhook.

What about recording and telling callers?

Alony records every call, and you write the greeting, so what callers are told is your choice. Our recommendation and the OAIC guidance are in the greeting examples guide. Plans and limits are on the pricing page.

Common questions

Will callers know they are talking to an AI?

That depends on the greeting you write. We recommend telling callers. See the greeting examples guide for wording and the OAIC guidance.

Does an AI receptionist replace a human receptionist?

It answers calls when nobody is free to. It does not greet people at your front desk or do the rest of a receptionist's day.

How long does setup take?

The wizard takes a few minutes. To keep your existing number, forward it to your Alony number through your phone provider.

What does it cost?

Alony plans are monthly, in Australian dollars: Lite A$49 for 100 minutes, Starter A$239 for 500 minutes, Growth A$549 for 1,200 minutes, Scale A$999 for 2,500 minutes. The free trial is 5 minutes of talk time with no card. See Alony pricing.
