Greeting examples for an AI receptionist

Five examples in Australian English for made-up businesses, and how to write one that suits yours.

Last reviewed

A good AI receptionist greeting for an Australian business names the business, says who is speaking and that it is an AI, says the call is recorded, and ends on one question. Alony has no default greeting: the business writes it in the wizard. These five examples are for made-up businesses.

How does the greeting work in Alony?

You write the greeting in the wizard, at the Greeting step. It is required, and there is no default. The agent opens every call with those words.

Five greeting examples in Australian English

All businesses here are made up. Each one gives the business name, says it is an AI receptionist, says calls are recorded, and keeps to one question.

A plumber

Example business: Fraser Plumbing

"Fraser Plumbing, this is Sam, the AI receptionist. Calls are recorded. Dan's on a job at the moment. Is it an emergency, like a burst pipe or no hot water, or can I take some details?"

Why it works: it says who is speaking, why a person is not, and offers the urgent path in the first breath.

An after-hours heating and cooling business

Example business: Coastline Air

"Coastline Air after-hours line, you've reached Jess, an AI receptionist. This call is recorded. What's happening with your system?"

Why it works: "after-hours" tells the caller why they are not speaking to the office. The urgent-or-routine question comes next in the call flow, so the greeting does not need to carry it. In Alony's HVAC template that question is "Is this an emergency, no heating or cooling at all right now?"

A chiropractor

Example business: Northside Chiro

"Thanks for calling Northside Chiro. I'm Ella, the clinic's AI receptionist, and calls are recorded. Are you ringing to book, or are you in pain right now?"

Why it works: it puts the urgent question up front for a clinic where some callers are hurt. Alony's chiropractic template asks a similar question straight after the greeting: "Are you in pain at the moment, or is this a routine visit?"

An accountant or finance firm

Example business: Harbourside Accounting

"Harbourside Accounting, this is Ava, an AI receptionist. This call is recorded. I can't give tax advice, but I can pass your details to the right person. How can I help?"

Why it works: it states a limit early, so the caller does not wait for advice the agent will not give. A finance firm often has no urgent path, so this one does not offer one.

A general example for any business

Example business: Harbour Dental

"Harbour Dental, you're speaking with Mia, an AI receptionist, and the call is recorded. How can I help?"

Why it works: it has the three parts every greeting needs and nothing else. Swap in your own name and business.

Should the greeting say it's an AI, and that calls are recorded?

Alony does not add either for you, but we recommend both: a caller who finds out halfway through feels tricked, and one who hears it first rarely minds. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) says that when you use a public-facing AI tool, people should be made aware they are interacting with an AI system (OAIC guidance, updated 17 January 2025). This is not legal advice, and what you must say depends on your business and your state or territory.

Length and pacing

  • Under about 35 words, spoken, with the name first. Read it aloud; if you run out of breath, cut it.
  • One question, at the end. Two questions get half an answer.
  • Short sentences. The voice reads them better, and callers on a poor line catch more.
  • Leave out hours, offers and a website. Say the urgent path if some callers are hurt or flooded, and promise only what the agent does.

Pick the voice that says it

Your greeting is read in the personality you choose in the wizard's Voice step. Press play to hear each one.

Common questions

Does Alony write the greeting for me?

No. The business writes it in the wizard. It is required and there is no default, so the words are yours.

Does the agent announce that it is an AI or that calls are recorded?

Only if your greeting says so. Alony does not add it for you. Every call is recorded, transcribed and summarised, and we recommend telling callers.

How long should a greeting be?

Short enough to say in one breath. Business name, who is speaking, then one open question. Everything else belongs in later steps of the call.
